How much does custom market research cost in 2026?

Published July 16, 2026 ยท VerifiedDesk

Market research pricing runs from a few hundred dollars to a few hundred thousand, and the buyer's problem is that the price tag says little about whether the work will answer your actual question. Here is the landscape, what each tier really delivers, and where the money is wasted.

The four ways research gets sold

OptionTypical priceWhat you get
Syndicated report license$2,000 to $7,500 per reportA pre-written industry report sold to anyone who pays. Broad, not specific to your question.
Large research firm, custom study$15,000 to $100,000+Primary research, surveys, expert interviews. Weeks to months. Built for enterprise decisions.
Boutique consultancy$5,000 to $30,000Custom work by a small senior team. Quality varies with the individuals.
Independent researcher or research desk$300 to $2,500Desk research on your specific question. Quality ranges from excellent to a reformatted first page of search results.

Where buyers overpay

The most common waste is paying syndicated report prices for a question the report does not answer. A $4,500 industry report on "Global Logistics Software" cannot tell you whether mid-size food distributors in the Southeast are underserved by route planning tools. Broad reports answer broad questions; most operating decisions are narrow.

The second waste is paying custom study prices when the evidence already exists in public. A surprising share of business questions can be answered from filings, government data, trade press, marketplaces, job postings, and company websites, if someone does the reading and shows their sources. Primary research (surveys, interviews) is worth its cost when public evidence genuinely runs out, not before.

How to judge cheap research

At the low end of the market, price does not predict quality, so judge the artifact instead:

  • Citations per claim. Every factual statement should name a source you can open. No source list, no purchase.
  • Confidence labeling. Good researchers say which findings are solid and which rest on one source or an estimate.
  • Methodology note. What was searched, what was excluded, where the walls were. Its absence means the walls are being hidden.
  • A sample before payment. Any competent desk can produce a half page plan with a few cited early findings before you commit.

The honest budget guidance

For a specific operating decision at a small B2B company (enter a niche or not, how competitors price, whether a segment is served) a properly cited desk research brief in the $300 to $1,500 range answers most questions. Reserve five figure budgets for decisions that need primary data: proprietary surveys, expert interview programs, or statistically representative sampling.

This is the tier VerifiedDesk operates in: fixed price briefs from $349, every claim cited, confidence labeled, methodology included, and a free research plan before you spend anything. Whoever you hire, hold them to the four checks above.
